Studies show that around 40% of people with dementia will wander at some point. Wandering is very stressful for both carer and the individual concerned and is the most likely reason that people move into a care home environment. People with Alzheimer's or dementia who wander are 3 times less likely to remain living in their own homes. Not only does this result in a loss of independence and autonomy but carries a financial cost as residential care is roughly double the expense of care in the community.
